Working Life of Salary Inadequate for UK Workers to Enter Richest 10%, Study Says

Based on recent research, the median employee in the UK would require 52 years' worth of earnings to achieve the net worth of the most affluent 10% of the population.

Widening Financial Divide Across Decades

The study analyzed financial assets data covering the recent health crisis years and found that in 2006-08, it would have taken 38 years of median full-time earnings to reach the top 10th of the economic ladder.

A senior economist associated with the study stated: "Wealth gaps in Britain are currently so significant that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings throughout their career would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Measuring the Financial Disparity

The analysis found that the gap between the net worth of the average person and someone in the richest segment was £1 million in 2006-08, but had expanded to £1.3m in actual value by recent times.

The economist continued: "These differences are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is low – those who commence life well-off tend to remain affluent, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the wealth gap expanding in actual numbers, the portion of overall assets in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – known as "comparative financial divide" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," as stated in the research.

During this period, complete net worth in the UK rose substantially from thrice the yearly economic output, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "automatic" increases, by means of rising house prices and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, according to the report.

These gains typically went to older, property-owning households, the study demonstrates – intensifying the age-based economic gap.

Age-Based Financial Divides

The typical financial disparity between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135k in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Variations

There were also pronounced area-based disparities, with the average level of wealth in the pandemic period amounting to £290,000 in south-east England, where property prices have typically increased quickly, compared with £110k in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Effects

Throughout the COVID period, when millions of workers were supported by the public-funded employment protection, and pandemic lockdowns limited opportunities for spending, the information reveals many households were able to save, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, though. "The average household in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the pre-crisis period. In contrast, the average household in the highest income quintile saw their available funds rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
