The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
