One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
