EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
