A minimum of 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
